Approximately <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/ai-surveillance-startup-flock-safety-cut-several-hundred-jobs-amid-backlash-2026-10-09″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>270 positions are slated for elimination at Flock Safety, representing roughly 18% of the company’s approximately 1,500-person workforce, according to people with direct knowledge of the plans. Departures are expected at the end of October; the company declined to comment, and no public announcement has been made.

The cuts reportedly follow a voluntary separation program Flock announced in September. A company that recently closed a $275 million funding round at a reported $7.5 billion valuation is now cutting roughly one in six jobs, making the scale of the reduction notable against its recent trajectory.

A Network Built Across 49 States

Flock’s camera network stretches across nearly the entire country, automatically capturing license plates and vehicle data for thousands of law-enforcement and business customers.

Flock operates approximately 120,000AI-powered cameras spanning 49 states, mounted on streets and highways to automatically read license plates and record passing vehicles. Its customer base includes more than 4,800 law-enforcement agencies and nearly 1,000 businesses The company says its systems help those customers investigate and solve crimes

    Public Pushback and Legal Pressure

Resistance to Flock’s surveillance model has emerged across courtrooms, state legislatures, and corporate boardrooms, though available reporting does not establish that this backlash directly caused the workforce reduction.

A pposed deploying Flock cameras in their communities, compared with 38% who supported local use. Florida reportedly banned automated license-plate readers from state highways in September, citing privacy risks associated with the technology

A Virginia lawsuit alleges that the broad deployment of Flock’s cameras amounts to warrantless surveillance. That allegation has not been resolved as a judicial finding. Separately, Home Depot investors sought reviews of the retailer’s surveillance application partnerships after reports that Flock data was used in immigration enforcement.

Critics have raised broader concerns about data retention, access controls, and secretly tracking users through information-sharing practices. The available reporting does not establish that any of this resistance directly caused the planned workforce reduction.

Cuts Follow a Period of Aggressive Expansion

Andreessen Horowitz led Flock’s $275 million financing round, which pushed the company’s total reported funding above $950 million and supported ambitious plans for manufacturing and drone products.

That capital was intended to support a U.S. manufacturing facility and expansion into drone products. The reported layoffs represent a notable contrast against those growth ambitions, though no revenue or valuation impact from the workforce reduction has been quantified in available sources.

State-level restrictions on automated license-plate readers could limit Flock’s addressable market in ways that compound the workforce uncertainty. Whether the company publicly confirms the cuts and how major agency contracts are affected will be the clearest signals of where the company’s trajectory is headed.
