Use these quick tips if you set a timer on your iPhone or iPad, but it doesn’t go off, and you miss the alert.
The set timer on your iPhone or iPad won’t sound off because of incorrect settings or other software glitches. Usually, the fix is easy.
But before you proceed, play a song or video to make sure your device’s speaker works correctly.
Make sure Stop Playing isn’t selected
The Timers section of the iOS Clock app has a Stop Playing feature that pauses music, videos, and podcasts after a set duration. You can use it as a sleep timer for Apple Music, YouTube, and other apps.
While useful, this feature is also the main reason why you may not see or hear the timer even though you remember setting it. This is because you may have accidentally left a new timer to stop playing instead of a timer tone. Here’s how to check and fix that.
- Open the Clock app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to the Timers tab.
- Set the timer duration.
- Make sure Sound is NOT set to Stop Playing.
- Tap the triangle start button, and this timer will surely alert you.
Check that the timer is activated
When in the Timers tab of the Clock app, make sure your desired timer is running and not paused.
Check for conflicting timers
If you started more than one timer around the same time, you may not be alerted for both, and one may override the other. So, consider setting multiple timers that are a minute apart. While you’re at it, add clear timer labels so you can identify each timer in Live Activities and in the Recents section of the Timers section in the Clock app.
Increase timer volume
If you don’t hear the timer sound, make sure its volume is set to the maximum.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- If your device is on iOS 27, turn off Match Ringtone Volume, then drag the slider underneath it to the right to set max volume.
- If your device is on iOS 26 or older (or if you are on iOS 27 but want timer and alarm volume to match ringtone volume), drag the Ringtone slider to the right to increase it.
If you set timers on Mac, check the Sound slider in Control Center and ensure it’s not set all the way to the left.
Turn on sounds for the Clock app
Alarm and timer sounds play even when your iPhone is in silent mode, Do Not Disturb, or other Focus modes. Plus, it should play through the on-device speaker even if you leave your AirPods connected to your phone.
That said, you won’t hear the timer sound if the Clock app’s sound setting is disabled. Here’s how to check and fix that:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll down to the bottom and tap Apps.
- Select Clock from the list of applications.
- Tap Notifications.
- Make sure Sounds is checked. Also, ensure Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners are checked.
If you use wired headphones

If you used Siri to set a timer
Siri makes it easy to set timers, alarms, and reminders. However, if you have multiple Apple devices nearby and say something like “Hey Siri, set a pizza timer for 12 minutes,” all your devices may start working on your request, and then they all may drop off the request, leaving you with no timer.
Apple has a system in place that ensures your nearby devices talk to one anothersed most recently follows your request (do read this for more: Using “Hey Siri” with multiple nearby devices). But I can assure you this doesn’t always work reliably. I have my Mac mini, MacBook, iPad, and iPhone on my work desk, and regularly my Hey Siri commands are ignored by all devices, even though they all initially heard me
So, if you set a timer using Siri, confirm it by checking that the timer Live Activity shows up on the iOS Lock Screen or in the iOS and macOS Clock app.
Delete and re-add the timer
If you tap a recent timer to set it up again quickly and it doesn’t go off, tap the plus icon and create a fresh timer. While you’re here, tap Edit, then tap the red minus button to delete all past timers.
Restart your iPhone
Set a 10-second timer, lock your iPhone, and if the timer doesn’t go off, it may indicate a temporary system glitch. Turn your iPhone off and back on to fix this.
Update your iPhone
If your iPhone or iPad isn’t on the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update to download and install the latest version available for your device.
Reset all settings
Lastly, if you have checked everything but nothing helps, consider resetting all settings to their default.
