BandarLabs/Cobalt: SDK for building apps & an app store for your Kobo eInk reader
Cobalt consists of a launcher, a catalog of signed apps, a Rust SDK, and a runtime. The runtime is designed to run each app in an independent, unprivileged process.
The main features and characteristics of Cobalt are as follows:
• Running apps : Read, subscribe to feeds, play games, listen to audio, check tasks, and more, all on your Kobo without switching devices.
• Flexible app management : You can individually install, update, and delete only the apps you need via Wi-Fi.
Optimized for E-ink displays : Large touch targets, easy-to-read text, simple screen, and full refresh only when the panel requires it.
• Retains the Kobo feel : Because the app is added ‘next to’ the standard reader app, the user’s books, library, and reading settings remain unchanged.
• Wide range of compatible devices : As of the time of writing, the following devices have been tested: Kobo Clara BW, Kobo Clara Colour, Kobo Elipsa 2E, Kobo Clara HD, Kobo Libra 2, Kobo Libra Colour, and Kobo Libra H2O.
• Diverse apps : A catalog of various types of apps is available.
• Developer support for app development : Developers can use the Rust-based Cobalt SDK to build their own apps, deploy them to Kobo devices, and submit them to the app store.
• Easy installation : Can be easily installed from a browser or terminal.
• Security : Cobalt does not replace Kobo’s boot chain, so it can always revert to the standard reader after a reboot.
