Google is finally testing a native app lock function on Pixel phones. Built into Android 17 QPR3 Beta 3, the feature lets you lock individual apps with the same PIN, pattern, password, or biometric authentication you use to unlock your device. This differs from Private Space, which creates an isolated, hidden profile on your phone.
If you’re a Pixel owner who participates in the Android beta program, you can lock an app by long-pressing its icon and tapping App Lock. You can also manage multiple app locks by navigating to Settings, then Security & Privacy. For either option to work, you must have an active general device lock; App Lock doesn’t seem to support a separate PIN, password, or fingerprint from the one you use to unlock your phone.
Google has been toying with individual app locks for some time now. The feature first showed up in Android Canary 2603, but it only let you lock one app. Later, Android 17 QPR1 Beta 6 hinted at a way to lock multiple apps. Now, it’s back
The current beta is available to enrolled testers on Pixel 6a through the Pixel 11 family, including the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Unfortunately, the original Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are ineligible for this beta because their support window ended last month.
