Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is exploring fully automated delivery stations to handle the final leg of the shipping process, according to a Business Insider report.
The initiative, internally referred to as Project Tetromino, relies heavily on artificial intelligence and robotics to streamline the sorting and staging of packages before they are loaded onto delivery vans.
This development arrives as Amazon aggressively scales up its broader automation efforts, having announced in a July earnings call that it expects to more than double its robotic arm fleet in 2026.
The shift mirrors broader trends in the logistics industry, with competitors like FedEx (FDX) incorporating AI-powered Dexterity robots to autonomously load trailers, while UPS and DHL are adopting robots for unloading.
Amazon (AMZN) stock gained 1.4% on Monday and extended gains after-hours.
Massive Investment And Efficiency Gains
The internal planning document indicates that Amazon intended to funnel $103 million into an initial Tetromino pilot program in 2028. This pilot would be followed by the launch of five additional sites in 2029—each estimated at roughly $85 million—and 10 more locations by 2030.
If these plans are fully realized, the project would push Amazon’s total investment in Tetromino past the $530 million mark by 2029, Business Insider reported.
In terms of performance, the highly automated setup is projected to process packages at roughly 2.5 times the rate of Amazon’s current delivery station designs. Delivery stations serve as the final logistical stop, receiving packages from fulfillment centers and prepping them for drivers to deliver directly to customers.
AI Partnerships And The ‘Tetris’ Challenge
Business Insider notes that a key piece of the Tetromino technological puzzle might come from Boxbot, an AI and supply chain robotics startup. Boxbot’s system moves packages from conveyor belts to storage trays, then uses AI to sequence them for delivery. According to the startup’s website, this automated method can expedite the vehicle-loading phase by up to 10 times.
The internal codename, Tetromino, reportedly nods to the classic puzzle video game Tetris. This reflects the complex, puzzle-like challenge of efficiently organizing and packing parcels into delivery vehicles.
