As of mid-August, global tech layoffs for the year have already surpassed 2025’s total, highlighting how quickly the artificial intelligence boom is reshaping the workforce that helped build modern software.
For engineers, product teams, and support staff, the message is getting harder to ignore: The tools companies are rushing to adopt may also be speeding up job losses across the industry.
Here’s what to know
According to Futurism, citing Fast Company, tech companies eliminated 122,606 jobs across 278 companies worldwide in 2025. By August 6 of this year, layoffs had already reached 125,759 — surpassing the previous year’s total with nearly five months still remaining in the year.
Futurism noted that layoff tracking company Layoffs.fyi later put the 2026 number even higher, at 126,305. The mass layoffs were fueled by companies making cuts, including Salesforce, LinkedIn, Etsy, Zillow, and Rapid7.
A major factor in that wave is heavy corporate spending on AI. As executives back generative AI tools with aims to write code, automate routine work, and take over tasks once handled by core employees, they’re also putting more positions on the chopping block.
In other words, the industry that helped push AI into everyday use is now watching that same technology disrupt its own workforce.

AI is often sold as a productivity booster, and in some cases, that may be true. However, AI’s rapid expansion also comes with real costs that can impact communities in multiple and compounding ways.
Layoffs can hurt families in terms of household economics and well-being. Meanwhile, AI operations can require enormous amounts of electricity and water, especially through energy-hungry data centers. That can strain local power grids, complicate efforts to cut pollution if that electricity comes from dirty energy sources, and raise concerns about higher utility bills.
There are workplace risks beyond energy use as well. Companies may overestimate what AI can reliably do, replace workers too quickly, or create new security and misinformation problems by deploying immature tools at scale.
What can be done?
Companies can start by being more transparent about how AI is actually being used in staffing decisions. That includes clearer communication about which tasks are being automated, stronger severance and retraining support, and more realistic assessments about whether AI tools can truly and safely replace full-time work or simply shift it.
Policymakers and regulators also have roles to play. Labor protections, skills training programs, quality control requirements, and closer scrutiny of the energy and environmental footprints of AI infrastructure could help limit some of the damage as use of the technology expands.
