Lexar made a huge splash earlier this year at IFA when it debuted the Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD. It’s a ridiculously thin external drive, which the brand says is the world’s thinnest portable SSD. It’s finally up for grabs now, and you can reserve your unit with a pre-order starting at $249.99 shipped. You can get this in 512GB and 1TB capacities, and you can learn more about it in detail below.

The 512GB variant of the Muse SSD is listed at $249.99 shipped, while the larger 1TB version is up at $399.99 shipped. B&H currently expects the drive to hit the shelves and start shipping next month. This particular model, as we highlighted in our launch post, is an ultra-slim drive that measures just 3.8mm at its thickest point and tapers all the way down to just 1mm around the edges.

Lexar has managed to keep the Muse this thin by ditching the usual USB-C port altogether. Instead, the drive connects through the brand’s SnapLink magnetic cable, which uses a pogo-pin connector that snaps directly onto the SSD. Lexar also includes a magnetic sleeve for attaching the Muse to the back of a compatible MagSafe iPhone, which makes it a particularly interesting option if you want a compact external drive for shooting video or moving files on the go.

The Lexar Muse, in case you’re wondering, can hit up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write speeds over USB 3.2 Gen 2, so you’re still getting solid performance despite its ultra-thin design. It also supports direct Apple ProRes recording at up to 4K 120fps on compatible iPhones, letting you capture footage straight to the SSD while keeping the whole mobile setup relatively compact.

The Muse is a bit on the pricier side compared to a lot of portable SSDs out there, but you’re paying the premium for its ultra-slim form factor. It’s finally up for pre-order now, and you can get one starting at $249.99 shipped.
