Ramsey Show hosts urged Henry to sell his car, eliminating a $620 monthly payment, stop all new borrowing, and pick up a side hustle.
Henry, an HR technology worker from Oklahoma City, called The Ramsey Show and told hosts George Kamel and Jade Warshaw he had been laid off. He said he had been out of work two to three months and was now “making 90,000 and now I’m making 50,000 due to my field significantly shrinking due to <a href="https://myappsplus.com/from-chaos-to-clarity-how-unstructured-data-powers-automation/” title=”From chaos to clarity: How unstructured data powers automation”>automation and AI.” Then he described the move that turned a pay cut into a crisis: “I fully liquidated my retirement and maintain the lifestyle I was living.”
He summed up his situation: “I’m truly just drowning.” He owes about $45,000. That includes a $26,000 car loan with a $620 monthly payment.
He also owes almost $4,000 in credit cards and almost $15,000 in personal loans. One loan has a 35% interest rate. He took it out less than two months after consolidating with his credit union.
Wall Street’s AI Efficiency Push Shows Up as One Household’s Bills
Henry’s call is the household version of the restructuring investors have cheered all year. Publicly tracked 2026 layoff announcements include 30,000 at UPS (NYSE:UPS) and 30,000 at Oracle (NYSE:ORCL). The same count shows 16,000 at Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) reportedly offered voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees as it reshapes its workforce around AI.
The national numbers look calm. Unemployment was 4.2% in September, and initial jobless claims were 194K in late October. Those averages miss workers like Henry, who found new work at a much lower pay.
