Disney announced a planned $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic alongside a multiyear collaboration, and the first reported game from that partnership, a shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters, has already hit a wall. Bloomberg reports the project has been delayed with no replacement date announced.

The delay alone would be unremarkable. What makes this worth watching is the production philosophy sitting behind it.

A Big Bet on an Unproven Playbook

Epic reportedly paired an underestimated development challenge with an AI-first mandate that its own developers weren’t sure would work.

People familiar with the project told Bloomberg that Epic underestimated the staff and time the game required. According to Bloomberg, which reviewed an internal communication, developers also received a mandate: no more hand-written code. The game’s art, the directive reportedly stated, would be produced through full AI workflows, with Anthropic’s Claude among the tools involved.

Epic communications director Jake Jones offered the public framing to Bloomberg: “We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for <a href="https://myappsplus.com/everything-apple-still-has-coming-in-october/” title=”Everything Apple Still Has Coming in October”>everything we do.” That describes a human-led process. What Bloomberg’s anonymous sources described was something that reportedly caught developers off guard during a video call, where some questioned how errors in AI-generated work would be identified and corrected, and others doubted whether the approach could meet the project’s goals at all.

Those are not minor objections. They are the central engineering questions any serious AI production model has to answer before it touches a frame of animation.

What Actually Needs to Happen Here

The harder problems aren’t generating code and art through AI: they’re validating that output and protecting the brand standards of some of the most closely managed intellectual property in entertainment.

Generating assets through AI is the straightforward part of this equation. Maintaining visual consistency across a full game and enforcing the character standards that Marvel and Star Wars properties carry are significantly harder problems. The available reporting does not identify a public Disney approval of the revised AI workflow, and that gap is not a footnote: it is the critical unresolved piece of this story.

The intellectual property questions compound the operational ones. Who owns AI-generated art built on licensed characters is unresolved. What disclosure players receive about production methods is equally unclear. How contractual obligations to Disney get satisfied when the tool generating those assets is a language model trained on data whose licensing status remains deeply contested across the industry is an open question, not an established fact. Epic’s statement to Bloomberg addressed its general AI philosophy; the available reporting does not show Epic publicly addressing copyright ownership, player disclosure, or QA specifics.

Available reporting describes the project as delayed, not canceled. The distinction matters, but it does not reduce the pressure. Bloomberg’s sources described this shooter as the reported opening move of a partnership connecting Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar properties to Fortnite’s ecosystem. A stumble here sends a signal well beyond one missed release window.

The credible version of AI-accelerated development requires published review gates and named accountability structures. It also requires quality-assurance processes rigorous enough to catch what the model gets wrong before it reaches players. Epic has described the philosophy without publicly showing the safety net.

The next meaningful signals are a new release window, evidence of Disney’s formal sign-off on the revised AI workflows, and specifics on the human quality-assurance layer protecting the output. Until those exist, the reported AI-first mandate remains an ambitious internal directive being stress-tested on extraordinarily unforgiving intellectual property.
