WASHINGTON, D.C. —Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.told a MAHA summit audience that Americans should “become the CEOs of their own health,” pointing to artificial intelligence and expanded access to medical records as key forces he says are reshaping medicine.
“Medicine is completely going to change,” Kennedy said in an interview with Armstrong Williams.
RFK Jr. said he recently met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and argued that AI tools have advanced to the point that clinicians should be using them as part of patient care.
“You know, I met with Sam Altman this week, who’s the head of OpenAI, and he said two years ago he would not have advised anybody to take medical advice from AI, from CHAT GPT, or any of the other companies. But at this point in history it would be malpractice for a doctor not to consult them, to consult those technology and everybody,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy was appointed HHS secretary after joining now-President Donald Trump on the election trail ahead of the last presidential election. Since taking the role, he has overseen changes to the vaccine schedule and advised on the removal of dyes used in processed foods.
He also credited his tenure with a major increase in the sharing of medical records across the health care industry, saying it is helping patients gain access to information about their own care.
“When I came in, there were under 10 million medical records that had been openly shared across the industry by June. So about 15 months into my being here, it had increased to a billion. Because we are rocking down the barriers, we are allowing Americans to become the CEOs of their own health and giving them access to the records that they own,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy said the MAHA summit brought together groups he believes are driving those changes, from government and health care providers to private industry and technology companies.
“What I love about this summit is it brings together all the people who are transforming healthcare in this country, and that’s really the two sectors. It’s the, you know, the medical sector and the healthcare sector, my agency, and private industry, the pharmaceutical companies, the hospitals, and all of those groups are there, but also technology,” he said.
