The Motorola Signature 27 has one huge advantage over other Samsung rivals

I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Motorola plans to bring its Signature 27 phone to the US. For the last few years, Motorola has teased a return with a traditional slab flagship, but each time it turned out to be an overseas release. Thankfully, Motorola seems serious this time, and the phone is shaping up to be a true flagship.
It’ll run on the new (wonderfully named) Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, with a premium camera system and excellent sound. We don’t know many details about the phone yet, but I do know it has a legitimate shot at success in the US.
We’ve been hungry for smartphone competition stateside, and the Motorola Signature 27 has a recipe for putting a legit dent in Samsung’s sales in a way other rivals haven’t.
Would you buy the Motorola Signature 27?
Don’t underestimate having a carrier store presence

OnePlus put out some fantastic smartphones during its time in the US, but I knew the battle was over once the company lost its T-Mobile deal. Unfortunately, I think Nothing will learn the same lesson. Having your phones in Best Buy stores is better than nothing, and at least it gives some buyers a chance to touch and feel your product. However, without proper carrier backing in the US, companies hoping to make a dent don’t stand a chance. It’s too convenient for millions of buyers.
Motorola won’t have that limitation. It’s currently available at AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile stores, plus a whole list of MVNOs. In addition to being featured side by side with Samsung and Google phones, the Motorola Signature 27 will receive a full slate of outsized trade-in offers and attractive financing discounts.
It’s sometimes hard for enthusiasts to understand, since we enjoy the flexibility of buying our devices unlocked. However, don’t underestimate the appeal of adding only $27 to your monthly bill and getting a new phone. Plus, many buyers don’t want to deal with SIM cards or transferring their accounts, and they want to know where they can go if something goes wrong with their device — especially when it’s a lifeline.
Millions of buyers in the US finance smartphones each year, and Motorola will get a chance at some of that market with the Signature 27.
We’re starved for some value

2026 has been a challenging year for smartphone manufacturers and customers alike. The RAM crisis shows no signs of ending, and technology prices keep rising. We’ve seen price increases across Samsung’s smartphones over the last few months, and the Pixel 11 series release saw price increases across the board.
Part of Motorola’s renewed success in the US has been its aggressive sales and value compared to other phones. Motorola’s midrangers often go on sale, and even its Razr phones, with initially daunting MSRPs, drop to reasonable prices faster than other smartphones.
I don’t know what Motorola can do with the Signature 27, especially since it’s going to include a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 (nope, didn’t get any better the second time writing it). It’s undoubtedly going to be an expensive chipset, and Moto hasn’t made a habit of giving its devices less RAM or less storage. Still, I’m confident that if any company could get a phone like that down to around $1,000-$1,100, it would be Motorola. I understand that’s not exactly mind-boggling value, but I’d appreciate seeing a flagship move in the other direction for once, especially compared with what’s currently available from Samsung and Google.
Motorola’s laid the groundwork for the Signature 27
Motorola’s in a unique position for success with the Signature 27, but not only because of its carrier store presence. The company’s spent the last few years re-establishing itself as a lifestyle brand, and it’s found success with the Razr lineup. The company may be drastically different from the Motorola of the 80s and 90s, but it’s still a household name. When I hear Motorola, I immediately picture a phone, and millions of Americans will also. OnePlus and Nothing had a lot of ground to make up, so they had to explain their brands and what they do. Motorola will already be ahead with most buyers.
Motorola has also done a wonderful job focusing on what matters most to customers. The company has improved the cameras it ships. The latest phones provide top-notch battery life (and battery tech), in ways Samsung and Google currently can’t match in the US. Moto has also released some stylish products, and that matters. It’s not afraid to experiment with different textures and designs, and I’m thankful at least one company is putting out something that’s not meant for everyone.
It’s a long way from over

Despite my optimism, it’s important to recognize the economic realities. Even with everything Motorola has going for it, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to mount any significant challenge to Samsung in the US. Motorola is in a much better position than most who have tried before, but Moto’s success won’t be defined by overtaking Samsung’s market share, but by eroding some of its dominance.
For me, it doesn’t matter. We desperately need another company in the US pushing innovation the way we haven’t seen in a while, and I’m thankful Motorola is finally willing to give it a shot.
