The iPhone 18 Pro proves that Android’s biggest problem has nothing to do with hardware

Android manufacturers need to learn how to tell a story.

I’m picking up an iPhone 18 Pro, my 14th iPhone, today. And while waiting in line for Apple’s latest doesn’t have the same appeal it did in 2007, something about the iPhone still gets people out in droves. I can always sense the frustration of Android users who look over and see the attention the iPhone gets. And I also understand the points made. I ranked the Galaxy S26 Ultra ahead of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and Google’s done a solid job with the Pixel 11 Pro XL.

    However, it’s not enough.

Google and Samsung, along with other Android manufacturers, have closed the gap with the iPhone. Hardware improvements and better software have made Android a legitimate alternative to iOS devices. Still, Apple maintains its dominance because it does one thing better than anyone else: it tells a story.

Would you ever consider an iPhone?

Google and Samsung closed the gap

    Joe Maring / Android Authority

Steve Jobs was right about the iPhone in 2007 — it was five years ahead of anything else. When you look at the smartphone landscape nearly two decades ago, you see a variety of standards and software platforms, none as intuitive or solid as the iPhone. The original iPhone wasn’t perfect, and I remember being frustrated by how limiting it was in its first year. Still, it set the bar for what followed.

But that advantage didn’t last forever. It took a while, but Android manufacturers started to get things right. I do pine for the early days of Android, when each company had its own (heavily) skinned user experience, but I recognize what we gained by giving that up. Not all Android flavors are created equal, but the experience is consistent enough across the platform that it’s much easier for new users than ever.

Material 3 Expressive design on Pixel phones is the best example yet. It’s fun, intuitive, and approachable in a way that Android hasn’t been. If you are tired of iOS, I always recommend a Pixel as a safe landing spot to start your Android journey. No matter which phone you choose, the experience has gotten more reliable across the board. Multitasking works well, and those inconsistencies and poor user experiences Apple always claimed it was shielding you from are few and far between on Android phones in 2026.

Premium hardware and specs make a difference

Android hardware has also caught up to the iPhone. The Galaxy S26 Ultra, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Motorola Razr Ultra are fantastic devices with a premium build. Whenever I pick one up, I know I’m holding a flagship phone.

Camera quality has improved to the point where it’s a toss-up whether you prefer snaps from an iPhone, a Galaxy, or a Pixel. And there’s no appreciable performance gap between phones. I’ll be the first to admit that Apple silicon is impressive, and the A-series chipsets in current iPhone devices are formidable.

However, I get the same high-quality performance from phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. And despite all the hate it gets, I’ve had a solid experience with the Tensor G6 in the Pixel 11 Pro XL. Raw horsepower has become less important in our smartphones, so whatever benchmark advantages one chipset has over another don’t really show up in daily use. Android hardware is better than ever, and if we’re being honest, the premium gap that once existed between the iPhone 4 and a Galaxy S3 is no longer there.

    Apple still keeps winning repeatedly

There’s a sales phrase: telling isn’t selling. Those Mac vs. PC ads in the mid-2000s didn’t mention hardware specs or functionality, but they were effective. Without knowing anything, you understood you bought a PC for work, but if you had a soul, you picked up a Mac — it told a story. Apple is fantastic at controlling a narrative in ways that Google and Samsung haven’t been able to duplicate.

The iPhone Duo announcement was a perfect example. Samsung and Google could do as many presentations as they want, telling us about app continuity on their foldables, but nothing will beat the simplicity of that one animation of the iPhone Duo opening, with the cover screen folding away to reveal the same image unfolded underneath. It’s mind-numbing for enthusiasts who were probably shouting at the screen, but it’s effective marketing. You don’t need to know anything about foldables to quickly understand how the cover and inner screens are linked.

Apple is fantastic at controlling a narrative in ways that Google and Samsung aren’t.

The Pixel 11 Pro XL is the most frustrating example. Google has all the tools. Material 3 Expressive design is ideal for first-time Android users. The phone feels premium, with solid battery life and excellent cameras, and despite complaints, it performs well. AirDrop compatibility with Quick Share is a huge deal, and it’s less intimidating to leave Apple’s ecosystem if you’re willing to make the jump.

Still, outside noise controls the narrative. We hear the same old claims of overheating and poor gaming performance, ignoring the other benefits Google provides. Like so many other companies, Google isn’t telling the story of why you buy a Pixel over everything else, and until it presents these phones differently, Apple will still have lines around the block on iPhone release day.
