It also helps to separate the connection from the way the speaker is powered. Traditional passive speakers need a separate amplifier, which sends the amplified signal through speaker wire. Powered, or active, speakers have amplification built in. A wireless speaker receives audio over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or another wireless connection, but that doesn’t necessarily make it cable-free. Many home models still plug into an outlet, while portable speakers run on batteries.
What wired speakers still do better
One clear advantage of passive wired systems is modularity. Because the amplifier and speakers are separate, you can replace or upgrade one without rebuilding the whole setup. That matters when you’re putting together a stereo or home theater system you expect to keep for years.
A wired connection also removes Bluetooth transmission from the latency chain. Bluetooth can introduce a delay between the source and the sound reaching the speaker, with the amount varying between devices. Video playback can often compensate by delaying the picture to keep it in sync, but it’s harder to mask in video games since the sound needs to react to what you’re doing. Cables are the obvious trade-off. A basic stereo pair is usually easy enough to wire, but setting up surround sound can mean running speaker cables to several points around a room. That can limit placement or leave you figuring out how to hide wires along walls, under rugs or behind furniture.
Where wireless speakers have the advantage
Wireless speakers are easier to place when you don’t want to run audio cables across a room. Bluetooth models connect directly to a phone, tablet or laptop without relying on home Wi-Fi, which makes them especially useful for portable listening. Wi-Fi speakers are better suited to a permanent home setup. Compatible models can use the same network for synchronized playback across several rooms, often through a companion app. The Denon Home 200, 400 and 600 speakers we reviewed, for example, use the HEOS app to group speakers or control rooms separately.
The trade-off is that wireless systems replace some cable management with network and software dependence. Wi-Fi speakers still need power, and multi-room platforms can work best when you stay within one ecosystem. Bluetooth range and reliability can also vary with distance, interference and the devices involved.
Bluetooth doesn’t automatically mean poor audio quality, either. Many codecs use lossy compression, but Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless is designed to deliver CD-quality lossless audio with compatible hardware, a losslesslossless and high-resolution streaming too, so the connection type alone doesn’t determine how good a speaker will sound

Which setup makes more sense for you?
Wired speakers are the stronger fit for a permanent stereo or home theater system if you don’t mind running cables. Passive models give you more freedom to replace the amplifier or speakers later, and the wired connection avoids Bluetooth latency.
Wireless speakers make more sense when portability, easier placement or multi-room playback matters more than component-level upgrades. Bluetooth is best-suited for speakers you want to move around, while Wi-Fi works better for several speakers spread through a home.
Sound quality alone shouldn’t decide it. Start with where the speakers will live and whether you care more about upgradeability, portability or multi-room playback. Then compare the actual speakers that fit that setup to get the best audio quality for your situation.
