California Governor Gavin Newsom has used his veto authority to send a bill passed by the state’s legislature back to lawmakers, which would have made it unlawful to secretly record people with wearable recording devices.

A new pair of smart glasses may seem like exactly what the world doesn’t need amid a bit of a backlash against the whole concept of these gadgets. But Snap says its new Snap Specs shouldn’t really be thought of as smart glasses at all. 

Alongside its new Specs AR glasses, Snap also revealed a new “anticipatory AI service” called Specs Intelligence today.

It works with the company’s new AR glasses and in its own mobile and desktop apps.

When Snap debuted its long-awaited smart glasses, Specs, earlier this year, the reveal was not only underwhelming but a genuine disaster. The glasses — which cost a whopping $2200 and are vaguely reminiscent of scuba gear — inspired jeers online and calls for the company’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, to resign. The company’s stock subsequently nosedived.

Snap has been experimenting with glasses for a decade and AR-enabled frames for the last five years. I’ve tried every pair, and it’s always been clear that the company was working towards something bigger. Specs, the company’s first consumer-ready AR glasses are exactly that.

Snap officially unveiled its Specs AR glasses at AWE 2026 in June, but the official launch was delayed until now. “It’s going to be that shift from phones to glasses,” Snap said at the time.
