A new Discord client built in Rust is looking pretty shiny and clean, even on low-end <a href="https://myappsplus.com/android-is-getting-my-favorite-ios-tracking-feature-what-to-expect/” title=”Android is getting my favorite iOS tracking feature – what to expect”>Android phones.
I love Discord, but if there’s one thing the app isn’t known for is it’s speed. That’s particularly true on phones that don’t have much RAM, but an upcoming new Discord client is changing the game for all users, regardless of the platform.
Discord CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy posted on X about several new Discord updates that are getting users excited. In the video, embedded below, you can see Discord running on two very old, lower-end phones (looks like a Samsung A-series to me). The current client, on the left, takes a full 3 seconds to launch, and then another 2 seconds to fully load. The new client, on the right, launches in under 1 second and is finished loading everything before the 2-second mark.
A release date has not been announced for the new client, although it is presumably launching soon.
Stanislav says the new client uses a lot less RAM, which goes in line with the new PC client he also posted about this week. That client is shown to be using just 300MB of RAM in the screenshot Stanislav posted. While I don’t have access to the new PC client, my current Discord PC client is using 1,200MB of RAM. That’s a massive reduction, assuming the numbers would look similar on my machine.
Now that Discord is cleaning up its client and the iPhone Duo is out, I’m personally hoping for a version that works properly with foldable phones. The Discord app has been finicky on foldable phones ever since they merged the Android app with the iOS one a few years ago. One can certainly hope.
