Apple just unveiled a huge update to the Mac lineup last week, introducing the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display.

In a new report, Bloomberg has details on what’s next for the MacBook Pro, with multiple new models expected to come next year.

What’s coming to the MacBook Pro next year?

Apple’s current MacBook Pro lineup features multiple different tiers:

    • M6 MacBook Pro
    • M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro
    • M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman says Apple will introduce a new version of the base MacBook Pro powered by the M7 chip next year. This machine will adopt the same design as the new high-end MacBook Pros introduced last week, which are thinner, lighter, and have slimmer bezels.

The report also says Apple will introduce a second-generation touchscreen MacBook Pro next year, powered by M7 Pro and M7 Max chips.

Gurman previously reported on Apple’s plans to skip the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, instead jumping all the way to the M7 family “as early as the first half of next year.” At the time, Gurman said the M7 line “is designed primarily around major advancements to on-device AI processing.”

Looking further into the future, Gurman eventually expects Apple to converge the MacBook Pro lineup:

With the first version, Apple is charging a $400 premium to add touch, OLED and the Dynamic Island interface. The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros without touch are sticking around, but I’d be surprised if Apple continued developing non-touch versions of its high-end laptop models. There’s an added burden on its engineering, marketing and manufacturing teams to manage two sets of high-end MacBook Pros, and the prices are close enough for convergence to not be that far off.

What do you think of the current MacBook Pro lineup? Should Apple prioritize converging the touchscreen and non-touchscreen models? Let us know down in the comments.
