Did you think hitting delete on your AI chatbot conversation actually makes it disappear? Georgia Tech researchers just proved that’s not entirely true. They have built a forensic tool called ORISA that can dig deleted conversations from your phone and even rebuild them into a working chatbot session you can keep talking to.

How can ORISA bring deleted AI conversations back?

Running AI assistants locally on your phone sounds private because it doesn’t send your conversations to the cloud. However, that data still lives in your phone’s working memory while the app runs. So, deleting a chat through the app’s interface doesn’t necessarily erase it from memory.

ORISA looks for those leftover fragments and stitches them back together into a live, working AI session. In one test, researchers created a fictional assistant called Project Note Keeper. They fed it 100 facts, then deleted the conversation entirely. Since the model’s memory window was limited, the live session could actively access only 14 of those facts by the time the conversation was deleted.

However, ORISA managed to recover 26 facts, which is more than the original session could access at the time. While that’s a partial recovery of everything that was originally shared, it shows that ORISA can retrieve more than what the original live session could manage. Across 60 test configurations spanning 10 Android apps and three different AI models, the tool successfully recovered deleted conversation data.

    Why this matters?

Researchers say ORISA could help digital investigators piece together what someone shared with an AI assistant and what advice they received, which has real forensic value. It could also help investigate cases where AI chatbot advice may have harmed patients, but the conversations were never shared with their doctors.

However, that same capability also raises privacy concerns for people who use on-device AI apps, since deleting a conversation might not be the clean break you’d expect.

For now, ORISA is a forensic tool designed for investigators, not a regular app that anyone can use to restore deleted chats. It also requires access to a copy of the phone’s memory and storage, and recovery becomes harder when other activity overwrites the relevant data. Still, the research puts a spotlight on just how much local AI apps might be quietly holding onto behind the scenes.
