Apple has built a device that can inspect an iPhone without opening its box

Apple is rolling out a new tool to help retail stores tackle iPhone return fraud and reduce wasted inventory. Some buyers reportedly remove accessories, strip components from devices, or take the phones themselves before returning the packaging, sometimes reselling the parts through aftermarket channels.

To prevent this, store employees have been opening even sealed boxes to verify their contents, but doing so can make otherwise sellable products require additional processing. Apple’s new device can scan an iPhone inside its sealed box and run diagnostics to check whether it is intact. Built on its Presto technology, the tool is now reaching retail stores.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new inspection devices began arriving at Apple retail stores earlier in October 2026 and are now becoming operational. A separate Bloomberg report stated that Apple had started installing Duo-specific Presto machines in its retail stores,

What the system does is that it wirelessly updates and prepares iPhones while they remain sealed in their boxes, thus allowing customers to receive devices with the latest software already installed.

This eliminates the need to download an update immediately after unboxing. The machines will also personalize the initial setup screen, displaying the customer’s name after the familiar “Hello” greeting when the iPhone is switched on for the first time – also showcased with the iPhone Duo launch.

Presto technology gets a new job

Apple’s existing Presto system was designed to solve a different retail headache: getting iPhones updated before customers take them home. The machines can activate phones inside their sealed packaging, install software wirelessly, and then switch them off again. The new inspection tool extends that approach to checking whether a device is intact

The distinction matters because opening a returned box can create unnecessary work. Even when a customer has simply changed their mind, store employees may need to inspect the product before reselling it. If the packaging has been opened, the device could require additional processing before it can be sold as new.

The new scanner aims to reduce that friction by allowing employees to run diagnostics without disturbing the packaging. Apple has not publicly detailed the tool’s full technical capabilities or specified exactly which faults it can detect.

What this means for iPhone buyers

For customers, the most immediate benefit could be better inventory management and fewer delays caused by manual checks. Keeping a box sealed also helps preserve its condition, which matters when a product is intended to be sold as new.

The system could be particularly useful in cases where retailers suspect that an iPhone has been removed, damaged, or stripped of parts before a package was returned. Such checks could help Apple identify suspicious returns while avoiding the unnecessary handling of legitimate ones.

However, the technology is not a guarantee that every sealed box is genuine or that every possible form of tampering can be detected. Apple has not disclosed enough details to establish the limits of its diagnostics.

The rollout does indicate how Apple is adapting tools developed for one purpose to tackle operational challenges elsewhere in its retail business. For now, the reported deployment is focused on Apple stores, with the devices beginning to become operational this month. Whether the company will expand the system further, or bring similar checks to other products, remains unclear.
