Next week Apple will unveil its first MacBook Pro redesign in five years. Rumors indicate the new MacBook Pro will have the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips as current models, but with exclusive advantages in at least four other areas.
#1: Significantly lighter industrial design
While the new MacBook Pro design is expected to be a little thinner than the current model, its biggest design advantage is a weight reduction. Per Mark Gurman:
The new MacBook Pros are lighter — significantly lighter. Apple has reengineered the machine’s interior miniaturizing parts and rearranging components to make the computer much easier to carry.
If you’re worried about Apple removing ports with its MacBook Pro redesign, it sounds like the company probably learned its lesson from previous generations. Since the design isn’t expected to slim down too much, it’s likely there will be minimal changes to ports.
#2: OLED display
The Liquid Retina XDR display on current MacBook Pros is an excellent display. But Apple plans to make its new MacBook Pro display even better by introducing OLED.
OLED has been used in iPhones for years, but the only example of Apple using it on larger displays is the iPad Pro. The tandem OLED introduced on iPad in 2024 was touted by Apple as “the world’s most advanced display.”
Now, OLED is coming to the Mac with the new MacBook Pro. And if it’s anything like what the iPad Pro offers, the new display is bound to impress.
#3: Touch support

Most MacBook Pro users probably aren’t asking for touch support. But if you’re like me, you may find that there are some cases where it would be valuable if you could touch the Mac’s display.
Apple’s new MacBook Pro will make that possible. Its OLED display will include full touchscreen capabilities and benefit from touch optimizations throughout macOS Golden Gate.
Touch isn’t replacing the primary input methods of trackpad and keyboard. Rather, it’s being introduced as a secondary “nice-to-have” option.
#4: Notch-free display
Apple’s last MacBook Pro redesign in 2021 brought the notch to the Mac. And this redesign will reportedly remove it.
Like Apple has done on the iPhone, it’s removing the notch first on its Pro line. The new MacBook Pro drops the notch, reportedly in favor of a hole-punch camera cutout.
A new Dynamic Island feature is expected to be introduced too, though there’s a chance it might come to older Macs
