The Galaxy Z Fold 8 app turns it into a Sony Walkman using your music, YouTube Music, and even Spotify very soon.
Foldables sort of walk that dichotomic line between nostalgic and futuristic. They remind us of flip phones from the 2000s, while running on an entirely different decade of tech.
Naturally, a Walkman-style app is a welcome addition to something like the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
One user developed an app called “Foldman” that uses your music from local storage or other apps and plays them in a virtual tape deck. On the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the app’s facade looks just like a cassette player. The app expands to show a wider stereo visual when the phone is opened up.
There’s a ton of cool little touches, like a volume slider and running tape counter on the virtual player. And the tape actually transfers from one tape reel to the other instead of a looping animation with no progressive movement! That’s such a nice little detail.
A Walkman-esque app fits so well on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 because of how wide and short the front display is, just like Sony’s original cassette player. That form factor is becoming increasingly popular, and it’s creating opportunities for some cool apps like this.
The app’s developer plans to integrate Spotify within the next couple of days and cautions that this early version has some rough edges. For now, it works with YouTube Music and Apple Music, as well as with files stored locally. The app is free and open
We never recommend users download APKs outside of verified app stores, so do so at your own risk.
Beyond Spotify, they note that they’re looking into adding support for self-hosted streaming services, so users can use it with their existing library of digital files on their network. For now, it’s a simple little Walkman-style player, and that’s cool enough.
