According to a new report, Samsung’s Galaxy S27 series might not use the latest Snapdragon chipset due to overheating problems.

The Snapdragon vs Exynos debate has been around for years, with Samsung often mixing its two flagship chipset choices, but also occasionally going all in on one or the other. Snapdragon is almost exclusively used in the US, with the last time Samsung used Exynos entirely in the States being the Galaxy S6 over a decade ago. That was due to overheating problems with Qualcomm’s flagship chip at the time, and it seems we’re in for a case of deja vu.

Seoul Economic Daily reports that Samsung has “informed Qualcomm of the overheating issue” with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and is looking at Exynos 2700 as an alternative. The report claims:

Samsung is in talks with Qualcomm to resolve the heat issue within this month, according to sources. If Qualcomm meets the required performance, Samsung will adopt Snapdragon as originally planned; if not, it will have little choice but to consider the Exynos 2700 as an alternative, weighing performance stability and mass-production timelines.

Qualcomm announced its latest flagship chips in September and the top-tier Elite Extreme Gen 6 features a 2nm process and two 5GHz cores. Qualcomm claims a 13% boost in CPU performance over the Gen 5 chip, 44% improvement in GPU performance, and boosts to AI processing and power efficiency.

There have already been a few phones announced with the chip, including the US-boundMotorola Signature 27, but it’s too early to tell if overheating issues are going to be widespread.

Recent reporting about thermal issues related to Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is inaccurate. We are proud of the innovation and strong momentum behind our next-generation flagship platform and continue to work closely with global OEMs to deliver premium user experiences.
