Google has started letting some users generate custom Android apps by typing prompts into Google AI Studio. These apps are for personal use only and can include habit trackers, study quizzes, and more.
When a user describes the app they want, Google’s Antigravity Agent pieces together a complete Kotlin and Jetpack Compose project. This means the resulting app is native to Android; it’s not just a web wrapper. Users can preview apps in a cloud-based Android emulator, edit code, or download the project as a ZIP file for Android Studio.
Google AI Studio apps can access phone features like the camera, GPS, accelerometer, and Bluetooth, and connect to Gemini API integrations. But there are many limitations: The apps can only use client-side features and don’t work with server-side services like Firebase or multiplayer functions. The tool supports only single-activity, single-module projects and doesn’t support Wear OS or Android TV. And the browser emulator lacks access to camera capture, NFC, Bluetooth, or Google Play services.
Google AI Studio only requires a standard Google account—no Google Play developer profile or $25 entry fee required—even though the apps run through Google Play. Google says the apps appear in a private section of the Play app, separate from the public store catalog and inaccessible to others. If you want to share what you’ve made with other Android users, you’ll have to go through the normal developer process.
After a few months of pre-registration and beta testing, this feature is now available to the public.
