Roughly 1,000 Netflix employees are losing their jobs despite the company reporting strong financial results. Netflix confirmed on October 14, 2026, that it is eliminating approximately 6% of its global workforce, the largest single round of cuts in its history.

Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters announced the reductions in a memo to staff The scale exceeds Netflix’s previous major layoff round in 2022 by more than double

Where the Cuts Land, and What the Numbers Say

Product, technology, legal, and human resources teams face the greatest impact, per the co-CEO memo Netflix has not released a full geographic or departmental breakdown; the company says the process will vary by country and that leaders will notify affected employees directly

The cuts arrive against a backdrop of strong financial results. Netflix reported $45.2 billion in revenue for 2025, up 16% year over year, and $11 billion in net income, up 26%

Second-quarter 2026 results showed revenue of approximately $12.6 billion, up 13.4% year over year Operating margin slipped to 33.4% from 34.1% in the same period a year earlier, and third-quarter revenue guidance came in below some analyst expectations

In their memo, Sarandos and Peters framed the reductions as a matter of deliberate focus.

“Our mission, to entertain the world, is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources.” Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, Netflix co-CEOs, in a memo to employees

External coverage from TechCrunch and CNBC links the layoffs to analystconcerns about slower per-user engagement and intensifying competition for viewer attention. Netflix has not confirmed that characterization.

A Larger Cut Than 2022, With New Questions About What Comes Next

Netflix’s previous major workforce reduction came in 2022, when the company cut approximately 450 employees after reporting a net subscriber decline in the first quarter The current round is more than twice that size

Netflix forecasts 2026 revenue of $51.0 billion to $51.4 billion with an operating margin target of 31.5%, per Forbes. The company had approximately 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025

Smaller reductions also occurred in early 2026, affecting several dozen members of the global product organization Netflix has not announced specific project cancellations, and any impact on development timelines remains unclear

Cuts concentrated in product and technology raise analytical questions about the pace of future platform improvements, including recommendation systems, advertising products, and user interface development. Netflix’s upcoming earnings report will likely draw scrutiny about whether reduced headcount affects its ability to compete on those fronts.

For the streaming industry broadly, the cuts may signal a shift toward tighter operational discipline over unrestricted headcount growth. Whether reduced staffing in core technical functions slows platform development or advertising expansion remains an open question.
