Automated, autonomous and automatic production is moving from PoC to operational reality in live sports production. Broadcasters and rights holders are <a href="https://myappsplus.com/what-are-the-limitations-of-using-a-usb-c-to-hdmi-adapter/” title=”What are the limitations of using a USB-C to HDMI adapter?”>using software-driven workflows, AI-assisted tools, and orchestration platforms to deliver more content with ever-tighter budgets and leaner teams.

During The Summit 2026, SVG Europe examined this topic during a session called ‘Lean production’ in practice: how far can (and should) automation take live sports broadcasting?’

Using examples from football and horse racing, speakers shared where AI and automation are delivering measurable value and where manual intervention still matters. The panel also addressed the practical limits. How far can automation be pushed without compromising quality, flexibility, or editorial control? And how should organisations manage the impact on roles, skills, and talent pipelines as production models evolve?

The contributors were: Tim Achberger, Sportcast, director of technology & product management; Ian Wray, Spiideo, senior director of media partnerships; Donald Sievewright, Matrox, director of sales; and James Gray, RaceTech, commercial director.

“Automation is not necessarily taking over roles but more so taking over tasks,” said Gray. “So roles will exist, but the tasks within those roles will change, and automation will be stepping in. And generally, automation works well on the repetitive, mundane tasks.”
