Seattle AI: How the industry is changing jobs

Seattle AI: How the industry is changing jobs

Seattle tech industry leaders are optimistic as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in everyday lives, including the affects it could have on local jobs.

SEATTLE -Seattle tech leaders are navigating the rise of artificial intelligence in the workplace with optimism while bracing for major shifts in how human roles operate.

As automated tools perform increasingly complex tasks, local experts say technology is transforming everyday duties, creating new job categories, and altering the job market landscape across white-collar and service industries.

AI Robots Enter the Service Industry

At Artly AI near Pike Place Market in Seattle, co-founder and CEO Yushan Chen has deployed robots as baristas. Utilizing machine learning and cameras, the robotic units spot mistakes and adjust their movements in real time.

The machine was trained by Joe Yang, the 2023 U.S. National Coffee Brewer Cup champion. Chen noted that while the technology beats the average coffee maker, its goal is not to replace human experts but to empower them.

An Artly robot system sells for $88,000 or leases for $2,500 per month, allowing small businesses to generate new revenue streams with lower overhead costs.

The shop still employs a human worker to manage stock and interact with customers—a personal touch the robots cannot replicate.

Software Engineers Shift From Writing to Reviewing Code

In the tech sector, AI is drastically altering daily workflows. Former Amazon software engineer Ravish Gupta said his primary role has shifted from writing code by hand to reviewing code generated by AI agents.

Gupta said he gets significantly more done now, but he still manually corrects the code when AI models hallucinate errors. He noted that software engineers with AI backgrounds have generally found new positions more easily during recent industry shifts.

However, job displacement remains a challenge across the broader market. Microsoft’s new Future of Work report found that early-career professionals are having a harder time finding jobs as AI takes over entry-level tasks.

Research Shows White-Collar Jobs Face Highest Risk

In a preprint research paper currently awaiting peer review, Gupta analyzed the broader impact of AI automation on the workforce. His research indicates that jobs requiring physical presence—such as baristas—are among the safest from total displacement.

Conversely, white-collar roles in legal and financial sectors, including credit analysts, paralegals, data analysts, and judges, face higher immediate risk. Gupta’s projections indicate that role displacement in Seattle could reach levels currently seen in high-tech hubs like San Francisco by 2030.

The study also found that job risk is closely tied to where a company is headquartered rather than where an employee lives. Workers employed remotely by companies based in major tech centers face elevated displacement risks regardless of their physical location.

Calls for Worker Retraining and AI Governance

To mitigate widespread job losses, Gupta advocates for proactive measures from governments and corporations, including updating the education system to prepare workers for emerging fields like governance engineering.

He argues that AI companies replacing human positions should help fund training pipelines to support workers before they face unemployment.

Without balanced intervention, Gupta warns that shrinking consumer markets could ultimately harm the broader economy, stressing that institutions must act now to prepare the workforce for the next generation of jobs.
