    ZDNET’s key takeaways

    • An issue is affecting iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T.
    • The problem is shutting off mobile connectivity.
    • AT&T has issued an update, but it doesn’t fix things for everyone.

If you’re having trouble with your iPhone 18 Pro Max on the AT&T network, you’re not alone. Since the debut of the iPhone 18 series last week, users with the top-tier model have encountered problems connecting to the AT&T network for calls, texts, data, and even 911 communication.

Also: 7 iOS 27 features that make old iPhones exciting again (no Apple <a href="https://myappsplus.com/trumps-super-intelligence-is-being-mocked-by-tech-industry-insiders-report/” title=”Trump’s ‘super intelligence’ is being mocked by tech industry insiders: report”>Intelligence needed)

Posts across Reddit and other support forums detail phones randomly dropping into SOS mode and frustrating efforts to communicate. Wi-Fi connectivity works just fine. So what’s going on, and how can you fix it?

How to fix the AT&T issue on iPhone 18 Pro Max

AT&T hasn’t explained what’s causing the issue. The problems only affect the iPhone 18 Pro Max and not any other models (not even other iPhone 18 models), so it’s possibly tied to that model’s Qualcomm modem (the other iPhone 18 models use the Apple C2 modem).

AT&T sent a text message to customers that reads: “Hi, it’s AT&T. Action needed: An important Apple Software update for your iPhone 18 Pro Max is available. Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately – Settings > General > Software Update. Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have questions.”

The iOS 27.0.1 software update fixes a freezing problem, a Face ID glitch, and several smaller issues, but its description doesn’t mention AT&T, the phone’s modem, or even any network issues. Still, if you’re having problems with AT&T connectivity, applying this update should be your first step.

    Doesn’t seem to work everyone

While users say applying the iOS 27.0.1 update works in some cases, it doesn’t fix the problem for everyone

Also: 5 hidden iOS 27 upgrades that make a big difference – and why I love them

When I contacted AT&T, a representative told me, “Apple has released a software update to address an issue that may affect calls, data, texts and 911 calls on a small number of Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. AT&T customers with an iPhone 18 Pro Max should update their phones now to the latest available software. Our top priority is ensuring customers can stay connected when they need it most, and we are working with Apple to make it right.”

The statement added that customers who continue to experience issues can return to Apple or an AT&T store for extra support.
