Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is facing another regulatory headache in India, but this one isn’t centered on the App Store or competition. It is about what happens when a software update allegedly leaves an iPhone needing an expensive repair.
India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority has escalated complaints involving Apple’s iOS 18 update to its investigation wing for a “detailed investigation.” The regulator is examining allegations that the update caused screen, microphone, and other functionality problems and whether Apple’s software warranty terms left affected consumers paying for repairs.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) disputes the accusations, saying that it did not find any systemic issues with iOS 18 and maintains that providing no warranty on software is consistent with global industry standards.
Bull Case
For now, this remains an investigation rather than a finding that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) violated Indian consumer law. The company says the case is based on just 75 complaints and that iOS 18 underwent stringent testing. It also said that only about 11% of iPhones were still running iOS 18 by June 2026. In a separate statement, Apple said it had identified no issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India and would work with authorities to provide clarity on its response to customers.
The CCPA alleges violations of consumer rights, but the investigation has yet to establish that Apple’s software caused the reported hardware problems. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is also defending the warranty structure itself, arguing in an August response to investigators that its no-warranty provision for software is not unusual and follows terms similar to those used by other major electronics companies.

The immediate financial exposure is also unclear, including any proposed fines, refund amounts, or estimate of Apple’s potential liability, and so any financial consequences remain uncertain at this stage.
Bear Case
The more significant issue may be what the investigation ultimately says about Apple’s responsibility for problems allegedly triggered by software updates. The CCPA said it received complaints that the iOS 18 rollout led to screen display and microphone malfunctions, among other issues. The investigation also covers complaints that green, pink, or white lines appeared on screens following upgrades.
