Google combines Material 3 Expressive & Liquid Glass on the iPhone [Gallery]

With Liquid Glass now a year old, Google apps on iOS are beginning to incorporate the translucent material alongside its Material 3 Expressive design language.

Previously, the Google Photos floating bottom bar on iOS had a solid background, just like the <a href="https://myappsplus.com/9-excellent-ios-apps-i-wish-would-come-to-android-but-probably-never-will/” title=”9 excellent iOS apps I wish would come to Android (but probably never will)”>Android version. As of version 7.94, it’s now made of Liquid Glass.

The screenshots on the left show the “Default” translucency level, while the “More clear” option is on the right and lets you see more of the image behind it. With the dark theme, you see how the default blue accent color tints the current tab indicator.

Google has also updated buttons in the top bar with Liquid Glass.

The traditional bottom bar in Google Health has also been updated with Liquid Glass. You can see what’s under the navigation element, while the “Ask Coach” FAB (floating action button) gets a frosted treatment.

The company is still in the process of phasing out the previous Google Material Theme design language on iOS with Material 3. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep have been stragglers, while Tasks was updated fairly recently.

More broadly, Google has shown no interest in adding Dynamic Color to its iOS apps. It could add a manual system that lets users choose an accent color across all Google apps. That said, without system access to the wallpaper, it’s a bit pointless, with Dynamic Color always more of a system-level Android feature.
