There are phones that try to stand out with one big feature and then there are phones like the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max which seems to be trying to do a little bit of everything.
It has a huge battery, a bright AMOLED display, a capable chipset, a 50-megapixel main camera, stereo speakers and a bunch of AI features packed into HyperOS 3.
On paper, it has plenty going for it. But specs only tell part of the story. Let’s take a closer look at how the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max performs.
Design and Construction
The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is a fairly large phone, and you definitely feel that once you have it in your hand. I guess, it’s as you’d expect for a phone with a massive battery, weighing about 229.5 grams.
It’s not particularly thick though, measuring 8.65mm thick or 8.57mm for the Cloud Blush variant so REDMI has managed to keep the overall profile relatively reasonable considering what’s packed inside.
One thing I do appreciate is the added durability. The phone has IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance. So it should be able to handle more than your average smartphone when it comes to exposure to the elements.
The buttons and ports are laid out pretty much where you’d expect them to be. The power and volume controls on the side; the USB-C port, dual-SIM tray and the speaker grille at the bottom. The phone has another speaker up top along with its mic.
Overall, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max feels like a phone designed around its large battery and display. It’s not the lightest or most compact device, but that’s a trade-off you’re making for the amount of hardware you’re getting.
Display, Multimedia, and Biometrics
The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max comes with a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate.
The refresh rate makes scrolling through apps, websites and social media feel smooth while the AMOLED panel gives you the contrast and deep blacks you’d expect from this type of display.
One of the more impressive numbers here is brightness. The display can reach up to 3,500 nits of peak brightness with up to 2,000 nits in HBM mode and 1,060 nits of typical brightness. That gives the phone plenty of headroom for outdoor viewing.
For watching movies and other streaming content, the phone supports Widevine L1 so you can take advantage of HD playback on supported streaming services.
There’s also Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protecting the display along with TÜV Rheinland certifications for Low Blue Light, Circadian Friendly, and Flicker Free.
For audio, the stereo speakers can get quite loud and there’s also a volume boost option up to 400% if you need some extra output. The mids and highs come through clearly although bass isn’t particularly evident. At maximum volume, the sound also starts to get noticeably distorted especially in louder sections.
When it comes to biometrics, the Note 17 Pro Max has an in-screen fingerprint sensor and AI face unlock. The fingerprint sensor is convenient for quickly unlocking the phone while face unlock gives you another option when you don’t want to use the fingerprint sensor.
Cameras
Now, let’s talk about the cameras. The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max uses a dual-camera setup consisting of a 50MP main camera with OIS and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. Up front, there’s a 32MP selfie camera.
The main camera produces strong, punchy images with bright exposure and warm, saturated colors across most of the shots I took.
The strengths really show up in close-up photography and outdoor street scenes. Close-up shots can capture crisp details with strong color saturation and good separation between the subject and background.
The main camera also handles indoor lighting quite well. Indoor spaces generally stay bright while photos retain rich textures.
Selfies follow a similar approach. Skin tones are warm and smooth, giving the photos a lively appearance without looking completely flat.
Outdoor cityscape shots also maintain good contrast and punchy colors whether using the standard camera or switching to the wider perspective.
However, the processing can sometimes be a little too aggressive. In darker indoor areas, there’s noticeable digital grain particularly on plain walls and dark furniture. Close-up focusing can also be inconsistent. There were situations where the camera focused on something like a subject’s arm instead of the face, leaving the actual subject slightly soft.
Dynamic range can be an issue in brighter outdoor scenes where skies can look somewhat washed out.
For video, the rear and front cameras can record up to 4K at 30fps.
Overall, I like what the REDMI is doing with its camera output. The images are bright, colorful and immediately shareable, particularly for food, portraits and everyday outdoor photography.
But if you’re looking for more restrained processing or consistently accurate focus in close-up shots, there are some limitations to keep in mind.
Performance and Benchmarks
The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chip built on a 4nm process with an octa-core CPU reaching up to 2.6GHz and an Adreno GPU.
Our unit comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
In our benchmarks, the phone posted an AnTuTu v11 score of around 900K. Geekbench 6 returned 1,069 in single-core and 3,393 in multi-core testing.
For graphics, it scored 3,732 in the Geekbench 6 OpenCL test and 5,059 in Vulkan. In 3DMark Wild Life, it scored 4,419 with an average frame rate of 26.47fps. PCMark Work 3.0 gave it a score of 12,383.
Storage performance is another strong point. It reached over 2,100MB/s in both sequential read and write speeds which helps with things like loading apps and games and moving larger files.

In everyday use, it feels responsive with apps opening quickly and multitasking being handled without much trouble. Scrolling through apps and switching between tasks also feels smooth especially with the 120Hz display.
For gaming, the phone handles lighter titles without much difficulty.
Hololive Dreams was playable at Normal settings at 60fps. There were some stutters but these were mostly noticeable during particularly intense moments rather than throughout the entire game.
That said, if you’re playing with the goal of hitting precise combos or inputs, those occasional stutters could be distracting so it may be worth lowering the graphics settings a bit further for a more consistent experience.
Wuthering Waves is where the hardware is put under more pressure. I was able to play it at the recommended config which was under the Quality settings. It gives the game a sharper and more detailed look without having to drop the visual quality too aggressively.
The experience was still playable during exploration and combat although this is naturally the kind of game where you’ll see the phone working harder particularly during busier scenes and fights with multiple effects on screen.
Despite the gaming load, thermals were also manageable during testing. The phone does get warm during longer sessions, as you’d expect, but it didn’t reach uncomfortable levels or become a major distraction while playing.
Overall, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max offers solid performance for everyday use and gaming. It won’t replace a dedicated gaming phone, but for a device in this segment, being able to run MOBAs at its highest settings and handle heavier games make it a capable performer.
OS, UI, and Apps
Software-wise, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max ships with Xiaomi HyperOS 3 based on Android 16.
The software experience comes with a decent collection of features specifically when it comes to AI.
You get tools such as AI Erase Pro, AI Glare Removal, AI Image Expansion, AI Sky, AI Bokeh, AI Cutouts, AI Image Enhancement, AI Beautify and AI Film.
There are also features that integrate with Google’s ecosystem including Circle to Search with Google and Google Gemini.
Some of these features can be useful if you’re the type of user who likes editing photos directly on the phone or using AI tools for quick changes.
However, the software isn’t completely clean. There is a significant amount of pre-installed software so you’ll likely want to spend some time removing or disabling apps you don’t need.
The overall experience is feature-packed but that also means HyperOS 3 can feel busy. If you prefer a very minimal software experience, there’s definitely some cleanup involved before the phone feels entirely like your own.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max has pretty much everything you’d expect from a modern smartphone in terms of connectivity.
There’s Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, an IR blaster, and support for multiple GPS systems. The phone also supports wired reverse charging at up to 27W which can come in handy when you need to give another device some extra power.
But the big story here, quite literally, is the battery. The phone packs a 10,000mAh silicon-carbon battery which is considerably larger than what you’ll find in most smartphones.
Charging is handled by 100W HyperCharge, so while the battery is huge, you aren’t stuck waiting around forever to refill it.
In our PCMark Battery test, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max lasted 29 hours and 9 minutes of continuous uptime. That’s an excellent result and shows that the huge battery isn’t just there for bragging rights. The phone can genuinely deliver very long endurance under continuous workload testing.
With that combination of a 10,000mAh battery and 100W charging, battery life is easily one of the phone’s biggest strengths.
Conclusion
The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G starts at PHP 28,999 for the 8GB+256GB variant. The 12GB+256GB model goes for PHP 30,999 while the top-end 16GB+512GB version costs PHP 32,999.
After spending time with the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max, I think it’s a solid all-around phone.
The display is great for watching content, the speakers get loud, performance is reliable and the battery gives you plenty of freedom from the charger.
The cameras are a little more hit or miss. I like the bright, warm and punchy look they produce especially for everyday shots, but the aggressive processing and occasional focus issues can be noticeable.
The main compromises are the phone’s weight, the camera processing and the amount of pre-installed software.
But if you want a phone that delivers a good mix of display quality, entertainment, performance, photography, and most importantly, a strong battery endurance, then the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max fits the bill.
It isn’t trying to be the perfect phone. It’s trying to be the daily driver you don’t have to worry about whether it would last you a full day or two, and for a lot of people, that’s basically a need fulfilled.
