The engineer said his current job allows him to save approximately Rs 40 lakh a year in Canada.
A 37-year-old software engineer living in Canada has sparked a discussion on Reddit after saying he is considering moving back to India and stepping away from the technology industry, despite having accumulated a personal net worth of around Rs 13 crore.
The man, who lives in Canada with his 34-year-old wife and their six-month-old daughter, said increasing professional burnout has made him question whether he wants to remain in the tech industry for another decade or more.
In a Reddit post titled “37M, Rs 13 Cr NW, burned out in Canada – what would you do?”, he said he was seriously considering returning to India, taking several months away from work and then deciding what he wanted to do next.
“I’m increasingly burned out with tech and don’t see myself doing this for another 10–15 years,” he wrote.
“I’m seriously considering moving back to India, taking 6–12 months off, and then figuring out what I want to do next – business, investing, a lower-stress job, or something completely different.”
Techie says he has Rs 13 crore personal wealth
According to the Reddit user’s post, his personal net worth is approximately Rs 13 crore, although he has deliberately excluded the family’s primary residence in Ahmedabad from that calculation.
Rs 2 crore worth of land in India
The family owns a home in Ahmedabad valued at around Rs 2.5 crore, he said, with approximately Rs 1 crore remaining on the home loan. He has not included the property in his stated Rs 13 crore net worth.

The engineer also clarified that the figure represents his own wealth and does not include his wife’s assets.
“My wife has her own assets, and we generally keep our finances separate while sharing household expenses,” he wrote.
“The Rs 13 Cr above is entirely my own and does not include her assets or any family/inheritance wealth on her side.”
He saves Rs 40 lakh in Canada but believes India could still work
The engineer said his current job allows him to save approximately Rs 40 lakh a year in Canada.
However, he believes that returning to India would not necessarily mean giving up the ability to build wealth. With what he described as a decent job, he estimates that he could still save around Rs 25 lakh annually in India.
That Rs 15 lakh difference in annual savings has become central to his dilemma.
“I currently save around ₹40L/year in Canada. I feel I could still save around ₹25L/year in India with a decent job, so I’m questioning whether the additional savings are worth the stress and uncertainty,” he wrote.
The engineer said he was therefore weighing three broad options: remaining in Canada but finding a less demanding job, returning to India and taking a six-to-12-month break, or leaving his current career path altogether and trying something different.
“For those who have been in a similar situation: What would you do if you were in my shoes?” he asked.
“Stay in Canada and find a less stressful job, move back to India and take 6–12 months off, or do something completely different?”
He specifically asked Reddit users who had moved back to India or left technology careers in their 30s to share their experiences.
Reddit users divided over Canada vs India
The post drew several responses from users who offered different perspectives on whether the engineer should stay in Canada or return to India.
One user urged him to prioritise his family and wellbeing over his career.
“Bro just go home. Take care of yourself and your family. Relax and figure it out after 6-7 months.”
Another suggested staying in Canada but changing jobs rather than making an immediate international move.
“Stay here. Find less stressful job. Do something different. Especially considering money isn’t a factor anymore,” the user commented.
A third Reddit user said the technology job market in Canada had deteriorated and shared their own experience of moving back to India.
“The software market is getting worse and worse in Canada. I moved back and haven’t regretted it,” they wrote.
Another advised the engineer to take a proper break before making a major career decision.
“I would take a break, go for a relaxing vacation away from work for few days / weeks and figure out in my better senses,” the user said.
One commenter was more direct, suggesting that the engineer return to India given his financial position.
“Take the first flight out to India and enjoy your health and wealth. Even at a conservative investment you can generate enough cash to live a comfortable life at that level of wealth. And if you live at home expenses will be less anyways,” the user wrote.
