There is nothing quite like the unique horror of opening an outdoor trash can on a hot summer afternoon and finding a writhing nest of maggots.

The basics: tying up the trash bag and keeping the lid shut, is rarely enough during a heatwave, as high temperatures quickly turn decomposing food waste into an ideal breeding ground for flies.

It might sound a little weird at first, but this controversial kitchen trick completely changes how you dispose of food waste — stopping flies at the

    Why the freezer trick works

Instead of throwing leftover meals, peelings, or perishable food scraps straight into the kitchen trash to rot for days, stash them in a dedicated, sealed bag in your freezer.

Then, on collection morning, drop the frozen block directly into your outdoor binright before the waste collectors arrive.

Because the waste stays frozen solid until collection, it never produces odors, preventing flies from being attracted to the trash in the first place. Without the smell to draw them in, flies never enter the garbage bin to lay eggs, stopping maggots before they can even hatch.

Other ways to stave off summer stink

Direct heat accelerates food decomposition and intensifies smells. Moving outdoor trash cans into a shaded spot, such as behind a garden wall or under a tree, keeps internal temperatures lower and deters pests.

    The double-bag air squeeze

When disposing of any unfrozen food waste, seal it inside two bags rather than one. Be sure to squeeze out all the air before tying a tight knot to block odors from bleeding through the plastic.

    The table salt backup plan

If flies or maggots have already invaded, pour a generous layer of plain table salt into the bottom of the bin. Salt acts as a natural dehydrator, killing live maggots on contact while absorbing the liquid residue that attracts new flies.
