Apple‘s September event is weeks away, and the leak machine is running at full speed. The latest cluster of reports — centered on Weibo-based leaker Fixed Focus Digital, relayed by 9to5Mac — paints a pointed picture of what’s coming: a September unveiling for the rumored iPhone Ultra foldable, stock described as “extremely limited,” and a broader-than-expected initial rollout. The tension worth paying attention to, though, is the one between announced and available. Those two words are doing very different work right now.

    The Name Everyone’s Already Using

“iPhone Ultra” carries strong leak consensus — but Apple hasn’t said a word.

Multiple Weibo sources, including leaker Instant Digital, explicitly list “iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Ultra” as Apple’s fall 2026 lineup, with the latter identified as the foldable. MacRumors corroborates the naming across several reports. The “Ultra” label fits Apple’s existing branding logic — Apple Watch Ultra already staked out the high-end, no-compromises tier — making the name feel like the leading rumored option rather than a wild guess. CNET still notes alternatives like iPhone Fold or iPhone Flip remain in the mix. Apple, predictably, has confirmed nothing.

    What the Leaks Actually Say

    • September unveiling alongside iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max; Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman pegs the event for the “first half of September”
    • Fixed Focus Digital describes initial stock as “extremely limited,” with suppliers reportedly requiring 3–5 months to reach a roughly 10-million-unit production target
    • Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates closer to 1 million units immediately available at launch
    • Earlier reports of a U.S.-only first wave are now disputed; Fixed Focus Digital says Apple has not communicated regional delays to Chinese suppliers, suggesting a more global first-wave release

The Stock Problem Is the Story

Scarcity is the real headline — and it may stretch well past launch day.

Announced and available are not synonyms. Apple can place the iPhone Ultra on a keynote stage in September while most people spend Q4 2026 refreshing a sold-out product page. The 10-million-unit production target sounds substantial until you factor in that suppliers reportedly need a full quarter — or more — to reach it. That’s sneaker-drop psychology at a $2,000 price point: scarcity that’s partly structural and partly the predictable math of a complex new product category.

Existing Apple Upgrade Program participants may face prioritization complications given the constrained supply, though no confirmed policy change from Apple exists. That concern remains speculative for now, but it’s worth monitoring as launch approaches. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 broke pre-order records under very different supply conditions — rumored pricing for the iPhone Ultra lands between $1,999 and $2,399 — territory that signals a deliberate commitment, not an impulse upgrade.

Apple entering foldables matters for where the entire category goes next. The first wave, though, is realistically a limited preview. September means announced — and for many buyers, actually getting one may mean waiting considerably longer than the keynote hype suggests.
